SPAOH, Aug 6: The chicken farming industry in Bukit Saban has the potential to become a major source of income for local communities and a key supplier of farmed chickens in Sarawak in the future, provided it is developed through serious and well-planned efforts.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) News, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said farmers must demonstrate strong commitment towards the sector, which has promising growth prospects and the potential to contribute significantly to strengthening the state’s food security.
He said this during a meeting with 26 chicken farming participants at the N.37 Bukit Saban Service Centre today.
Uggah, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, said the engagement marked an initial step towards realising the vision of transforming Bukit Saban into a major chicken production hub and supplier for Sarawak in the future.
“Farmers must ensure that their poultry housing facilities and cages are suitable for their farming capacity to safeguard animal welfare and maintain the quality of chickens before they enter the market,” he said.
Discussions also focused on ensuring a sufficient supply of fertiliser and animal feed to support higher productivity and the sustainable growth of the poultry farming industry in the area.
The participants also highlighted challenges involving pests that damage crops such as corn and cassava, which could otherwise serve as potential feed sources for poultry farming.
Another key proposal discussed was the establishment of a chicken slaughterhouse in Bukit Saban to enable more systematic, efficient and standard-compliant slaughtering and processing activities.
“The presence of the Bebuling Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) Airport in Spaoh is expected to improve market connectivity for local farmers, opening up wider opportunities and enhancing the competitiveness of the poultry industry in the area,” he added. — DayakDaily
