KUCHING, Aug 21: The Mayor’s Walk 2022 achieved its target of 10,000 participants despite a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The programme, which is part of the larger Kuching Festival 2022 event, was held for the fourth time by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to promote a healthy lifestyle and environmental awareness among members of the public.

In 2019, the event recorded 11,768 registered participants, but it was not organised in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 movement restrictions.

Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian officiated the flag-off ceremony held at MBKS Foyer here today.

Prior to that, the event started with the arrival of participants at 5.30am before a brief Zumba session at 6.30am.

The 3km walk began at 7am with participants taking a stroll along Jalan Padungan to Jalan Tan Sri Datuk William Tan to Lorong Goh Meng Teck towards Jalan Sekama before making their way back.

Dr Sim also participated in the walk. Joining him were MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, MBKS Deputy Mayor Hilmy Othman and MBKS councillors.

After the walk, MBKS held a lucky draw which offered four folding bicycles sponsored by Go-Beyond Enterprise and other electrical appliances.

At the event, participants also received free health screenings from the Sihat Sarawakku Programme, including physical exams, blood pressure and pulse rate examinations, body composition tests and eye tests, with selected individuals eligible for additional urine and blood tests.

MBKS also received support from Ibraco Bhd and City Jogger’s Club (CJC) for the event. — DayakDaily
