KUCHING, March 10: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has been conferred the prestigious Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senatorship in recognition of his significant contributions to leadership development and community service.
Receiving the honour during the 70th JCI Kuching Installation and Awards Night at a local hotel last night (March 9), Wee expressed deep gratitude, calling it a humbling milestone in his nearly 30-year journey with JCI.
Wee highlighted the crucial role of JCI in shaping future leaders, stressing that strong leadership is more essential than ever.
He further credited the organisation for fostering essential skills in youth across various fields, from politics and business to government service.
“As Mayor, I am deeply passionate about Kuching—a city rich in culture, diversity, and opportunity.
“Over the years, I have had the privilege of working alongside remarkable individuals who share a common goal: to see our city flourish.
“Be it through infrastructure improvements, cultural celebrations, or social initiatives, every step forward has been made possible by the collective efforts of dedicated citizens,” he said in his JCI Senatorship acceptance speech.
Wee also encouraged young people to take an active role in leadership, urging them to step forward and embrace opportunities for growth.
“JCI provides a platform for the next generation to become the leaders they are meant to be,” he added.
In accepting the JCI Senatorship, Wee pledged to continue championing youth empowerment, collaboration, and the vision of a more liveable and united Kuching.
“To all young people out there—don’t just stand by and leave this to others. Discover the leader within you, no matter your field or future!” he said.
