KUCHING, Nov 28: Construction on the RM54.59 million Matang Baru Phase Two road project is 13 per cent ahead of schedule and remains on track for full completion by 2026.
In a news report by TVS, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas expressed hope that the progress of the road project, spanning 4.4 kilometres from Matang Jaya to the Batu Kawa-Matang junction, will accelerate to 20 to 30 per cent, considering the area’s is high population density.
“The road will be upgraded to urban standards, designed in accordance with the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak guidelines, and will feature a dual carriageway,” he said during a visit to the project site today.
Tupong assemblyman Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak government, JKR Sarawak, and the contractors for their dedication to improving the Matang area.
“We acknowledge the challenges involved in upgrading this road, but I have regularly informed both the Minister and Deputy Minister that this road is highly congested, serving over 10,000 daily users, and its completion is crucial,” he said.
Fazzrudin also revealed that about two kilometres of the road are expected to be completed by next month (December), with work continuing simultaneously on the adjacent section.
For the record, after the previous contractor failed to complete the project by the end of 2022, a new contractor took over the Matang Baru Phase Two road upgrade, with full completion now projected for 2026.
