MIRI, March 13: The Maritime Malaysia has launched a special ‘Ops Pagar Laut’ operation to curb and combat cross-border criminal activities, including the entry of illegal immigrants (PATD), and the smuggling of goods such as firecrackers, controlled items, and contrabands.

The operation focuses on hotspot areas, particularly during Ramadan and Syawal.

Miri Maritime Zone has so far conducted a total of 449 inspections and 173 search to date, resulting in six arrests under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) and the Customs Act.

Among these, one case involved the seizure of contraband, specifically an attempt to smuggle cigarettes and alcoholic beverages into Lawas on March 3.

Miri Maritime Zone deputy director of operations, Maritime Commander Mahkos Juing, highlighted these enforcement actions during a breaking-of-fast event with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Miri yesterday evening.

“The arrests and seizures made by the Miri Maritime Zone thus far reflect Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency’s (MMEA) unwavering commitment to strengthening national maritime security.

“These actions also serve as a clear and firm warning to criminals that Malaysia’s maritime authorities will not tolerate any violation of the law, and stern action will be taken against those found guilty,” he stated. – DayakDaily
