KUCHING, May 18: The provision of sites and the construction of water storage tanks should be made one of the main conditions for the approval of any development project, including housing and industrial projects, says Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

In his ministerial winding-up speech, Julaihi said that the matter has been proposed to the State Planning Authority (SPA) for further action and consideration.

“To ensure stable and sufficient water supply pressure in the future, developers involved in development projects, including housing and industrial projects, are required to obtain verification from the Water Supply Authorities (JBALB and Sarawak Water) regarding the overall design of the water supply system.

“The provision of sites and construction of water storage tanks are crucial to meet high water demand caused by population density,” he said during his speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) today.

He elaborated that the issue arises because it was overlooked or not taken into account during the early planning or construction stages, citing incidents in areas such as Flat Sibu Jaya, Vista Ilmu Apartment, Uni Garden, and residential areas around Samarindah in Kota Samarahan. — DayakDaily
