Man with schizophrenia sentenced to 8 years’ jail, one rotan stroke for robbery

KUCHING, June 7: The Kuching Sessions Court sentenced a habitual offender with schizophrenia to 8 years’ imprisonment and a stroke of the cane for robbery.

Chong Liang Hung, 47, was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code for robbery, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of twenty years and liable to fine or with whipping, upon conviction.


When the case was first mentioned on May 5, 2021, he pleaded not guilty to the charge framed. However, he changed his plea today and pleaded guilty.

Sessions Court Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad sentenced him to 8 years’ imprisonment and a stroke of the cane.

Chong through his counsel, Abdul Rahman Abdul Rahman Mohd Hazmi informed the Court that he suffered from schizophrenia since 2013 and asked for a lenient sentence.

Chong was charged with stealing a Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.5AT at a parking lot of Emart Batu Kawah, at about 4.25pm on March 21, 2021.

In 2000, Chong was convicted of stealing four cars and was sentenced to imprisonment of 16 years. — DayakDaily
