Man to stand trial for hunting tragedy resulting in aunt’s death

KUCHING, Jan 18: A man who had caused the death of his aunt while he was hunting in the jungle will have his day in court.

Domanic Ridis, 46, was charged with causing death to his aunt by negligence and for causing injury without lawful excuse.

No plea was taken before Magistrate Zaiton Anuar who fixed February 21 for the mention of the case and allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM2,000 with one local surety for each charge.

The accused was charged with causing the death of Manyot Dunggah, 76, by negligence at Kampung Plaman Dunuk, Jalan Padawan, at about 12.45pm on January 8, 2022.

For the first charge, he was charge under Section 304A of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment term of up to two years or with fine, or with both, upon conviction.

The accused was also charged with causing hurt to Nancy Bungag, 73, during the same incident.

He was charged under Section 37 of the Arms Act 1960, which carries an imprisonment term of up to two years or with fine of up to RM5,000 or with both, upon conviction.

According to the brief facts of the case, at the time of the incident, the accused was hunting alone in the jungle and he fired a shot when he saw a boar. However, he heard someone screaming after the shot. He ran towards the direction of the screaming and discovered he had mistakenly shot both his aunts.
