Man sentenced to 7 years’ jail, 7 rotan strokes for MJC Batu Kawa robberies

KUCHING, Oct 23: A 30-year-old man was sentenced to seven years in prison and seven strokes of the cane for robbing three individuals at two separate premises in MJC Batu Kawa.

The robberies occurred within a span of less than five minutes.

The accused, Awg Mazheli Awg Jadid, who was not represented by a lawyer, pleaded guilty to all charges when they were read separately before Judge Musli Ab Hamid and Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi.

Awg Mazheli faced three charges under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison, along with a potential fine or whipping upon conviction.

The court was told that the first two victims were robbed at a local eatery at MJC Batu Kawa around 4.50am on Oct 5, 2024. Shortly after, Awg Mazheli proceeded to rob a third male victim at a nearby laundromat.

According to the case facts, Awg Mazheli, dressed in black and wearing a mask, carried out the robberies armed with a fake firearm, using it to intimidate and threaten his victims. He made off with two mobile phones belonging to two of the victims and a gas cylinder from the eatery.

A police report was filed, and Awg Mazheli was arrested on Oct 15, 2024. Investigations revealed that his actions were captured on CCTV footage at the crime scenes.

Further investigations found that Awg Mazheli had used a vehicle with a stolen registration number. He parked behind the two premises before entering and committing the robberies.

Among the items recovered from Awg Mazheli was a white “Joker” mask, which was identified by both the victims and witnesses as having been used during the crimes.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Muhammad Asymawi Ghazali and Cynthia Emmelda Jerry led the prosecution of the case. — DayakDaily
