Man pleads not guilty to charge of using unrecognised ‘Dato’ title

KUCHING, May 18: A man claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here today to a charge of using and enjoying the appellation and style of an unrecognised foreign award that carries the title of ‘Dato’.

Riben Rinah, 49, from Tebakang pleaded not guilty to the charge framed.


Kuching Lower Court assistant registrar Sataia Kombi who sat in for Magistrate Zaiton Anuar fixed June 21 for mention of the case.

The accused was allowed to be released on bail of RM1,500 with two local sureties.

He as a citizen of Malaysia was charged with using and enjoying the appellation and style of an unrecognised foreign award, Darjah Paduka Mahkota Palembang (D.P.M.P) which carries the title of Dato, at a company located in Riveredge Commercial Centre, in August 2019.

He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Offenses Relating to Awards Act 2017 and is punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, which carries an imprisonment term not exceeding three years, upon conviction.
