SIBU, May 23: A man has been arrested for having in his possession 620.7 litres of diesel without permit from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.

The ministry Sibu branch chief Kelyn Bolhassan said the 29-year man who is an employee of a company was caught carrying the diesel in a van on May 22 at Jalan Salim.

“The suspect has failed to furnish any document to prove that he has the permit to own such a large quantity of diesel, a control item,” he said.

He was subsequently detained for investigation under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961.

The offence provides for a fine of RM1 million for an individual offender and RM2 million for a company if convicted in court.

Kelyn said under the law, members of the public are not allowed to purchase diesel or petrol more than the quantity of their vehicle petrol tank without permit.

“Petrol stations are also advised not to sell the two items to the public more than the quantity allowed under the Act. Stern action would be taken against them if they are caught,” he warned.

Meanwhile he said members of the public who would want to provide information or complaints against errand traders could do so through various channels.
