KUCHING, July 8: A man who violently attacked his lover’s estranged husband with a meat cleaver has been sentenced to five years in prison and five strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court today.
Mohammad Razzi Japarudin, 28, who works as a labourer, pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt with a weapon when the charge was read before Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi.
The attack took place behind a house in Kampung Panglima Seman around 6.10pm on June 26, when the accused slashed the 22-year-old victim’s right arm with a meat cleaver.
He was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment, along with possible fines and whipping.
According to the case facts, the victim, who works as a security guard, had gone to the accused’s house to persuade his wife to return home after she had been away for two days.
The couple was in the midst of divorce proceedings due to infidelity, though no formal declaration had been made in court.
During the conversation behind the house, the accused, who was believed to be romantically involved with the woman, suddenly appeared with a cleaver and attacked the victim, seriously injuring his arm.
The victim was later rushed to the hospital by his brother-in-law.
A police report was lodged, leading to Mohammad Razzi’s arrest on July 5.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ruvinasini Pandian prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented in court. — DayakDaily
