KUCHING, July 26: An unemployed man was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for robbing others to buy diapers and milk for his two disabled siblings and his child before Hari Raya Haji in the Sessions Court here today.

Sessions Court Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman meted out the sentence after Hazrol Hanizam Haziman, 23, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code.

The charge carries a maximum 14 years’ imprisonment and is liable to fine or whipping, upon conviction.

He pleaded guilty to snatching Halimah Temu’s handbag from behind and ran away at Jalan Tupong, here at about 1.40pm on July 16, 2021.

The handbag contained items including two identity cards, one BSN ATM card, one Covid-19 vaccination card, cash amounting to RM12,600 and a Realme handphone.

The accused, in his mitigation, said his two siblings are disabled and he wanted to buy diapers and milk for them and his child before Hari Raya Haji.

He said his parents have no income and he, himself, is jobless.

In asking for a lenient sentence,  the accused said he needed to take care of his disabled siblings.
