KUCHING, Aug 13: A 23-year-old man was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today after pleading guilty to robbing a woman of her gold chain last December.
Judge Iris Awen Jon ordered the accused to begin serving his sentence today after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code.
The case was cracked after the man allegedly dropped his mobile phone at the scene of the robbery, helping police identify and arrest him.
According to the facts of the case, the 34-year-old victim was loading items into her car at a hypermarket carpark in Moyan, Jalan Batu Kawa, at about 5.13pm on Dec 18, 2025, when a man approached her and snatched the gold chain she was wearing.
The man then fled. The uninjured victim subsequently lodged a police report.
Police arrested the man the following day after investigations linked him to the robbery.
The mobile phone found at the scene was later handed over to police by the victim. While it was in police custody, the man’s girlfriend called the number.
Police subsequently arranged to meet the woman at a premises in Moyan, where she identified the phone as hers. She told investigators that she had lent it to the man from early December 2025 until the day of the robbery.
During his arrest, the accused also handed over a broken gold-coloured chain to police. Officers seized a hat, jacket and pair of trousers from him.
The victim later identified the accused during an identification parade based on his appearance and the clothing he wore during the robbery.
The clothing was also found to match images captured by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera at the scene.
He was charged under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of 14 years and may also include a fine or whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Osman Ibrahim represented the accused. — DayakDaily
