Man gets 7 years’ jail, rotan stroke for hurting, threatening wife

KUCHING, Jan 26: The Sessions Court here sentenced an unemployed man to total imprisonment of seven years and a stroke of the cane for hurting his wife with a butcher knife and threatening to kill her while he was drunk.

The man, 40, from Kampung Abad pleaded guilty today to the two charges against him.


Judge Steve Ritikos accepted his guilty plea and sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment of five years and a stroke of the rotan for the first charge, and two years’ imprisonment for the second charge.

The judge also ordered the imprisonment terms to run concurrently.

The accused was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to his wife by using a butcher knife, at their house in Kampung Abad, at about 11pm on January 22, 2021.

He was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 326A of the same Code, which carries an imprisonment term which may extend to ten years, or with fine, or with whipping, or with any two of such punishments, upon conviction.

He was also charged with committing criminal intimidation by threatening to kill his wife under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment term which may extend to seven years, or with fine, or with both, upon conviction.

According to the brief facts of the case, the accused was drunk during the incident and had hurt his wife and their son and threatened to kill his wife. Fearing for her safety, the woman lodged a police report.
