KUCHING, Sept 9: A local man was sentenced to 12 months in jail and fined RM5,000 by the Magistrate’s Court today for damaging property owned by an elderly man.
Jilan Seliboh, 36, pleaded guilty to two charges before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.
The first charge involved causing damage to 14 windowpanes and three cabinets at a house, resulting in RM10,000 in losses for the 77-year-old homeowner. The charge was filed under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries a punishment of at least one year and up to five years in prison, or a fine, or both, if found guilty.
For the second charge, Jilan was accused of criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code, after threatening to harm a 33-year-old woman.
Both offenses took place at a house in Kampung Maang, Batu 24, around 2pm on Aug 31.
For the first charge, Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan handed down a 12-month prison sentence. On the second charge, Jilan was fined RM5,000, with the option of serving an additional 10 months in jail if the fine is not paid.
The case facts revealed that the female complainant discovered her father’s house had been broken into, with all the windowpanes shattered and several cabinets damaged. Earlier, her sibling had informed her that Jilan planned to visit the house to collect a debt.
In addition to the property damage, Jilan threatened the complainant’s sibling, stating in Iban: “lagi ku pantap nuan ngenak duku, pecah kepala nuan kasak ku lagi,” which translates to a threat of physical harm with a sharp weapon.
The estimated damage to the complainant’s father’s property was RM10,000.
A police report was filed, which led to Jilan’s arrest on Sept 3 at Taman Desa Ilmu, Kota Samarahan.
Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while Jilan was not represented by a lawyer. — DayakDaily
