SIBU, Aug 20: Police have arrested a man for stealing a woman’s handbag at Jalan Salim on Wednesday with the help of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.

Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said at about 10.15am on Aug 18, the 66-year-old woman had parked her car to have breakfast at a nearby coffeeshop in the area.

However, she had left her handbag in her car, which contained five credit cards, four ATM cards, her driving license, and a gold necklace worth RM2,500.

“When she came back to her car, she found her car door unlocked and her handbag missing,” he said.

The woman subsequently lodged a police report.

ACP Stanley said a CCTV grab of a shop showed the 42-year-old jobless suspect opening the car door before running off with the handbag.

“A police investigating team recognised the suspect as he had prior records for violent crime and proceeded to his house at Lane 4 Jalan Salim,” he said.

When confronted, the suspect admitted to the crime.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft. — DayakDaily
