KANOWIT, Jan 30: A man has been taken into custody for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl at a playground near Fort Emma.
The suspect was arrested at his home at Delta Road today at 1.30am by a Criminal Investigation Department team shortly after a police report was lodged by the girl’s mother last night.
The victim is the second of three siblings and had been in a relationship with the suspect since they met earlier this month.
According to Kanowit district police chief, Deputy Supt Tega Bilong, preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, a Form 2 student, had gone with the suspect, a 41-year-old widower, to the playground to talk at around 5am yesterday.
“While they were chatting there, the suspect asked the victim to have sex. The victim did not resist when he pulled down her pants and kissed on her cheek,” he revealed.
However, the victim later asked the suspect to stop having sex with her but it was ignored.
Afterwards, the suspect left the scene to go to a lion dance performance while the victim, went to work at her part-time job at a coffee shop.
Upon returning home, the victim was questioned by her mother who had been informed the victim was seen with the suspect at the playground. The victim initially denied having sex with the suspect but eventually told the truth after being coerced by her mother.
According to Tega, the victim has been referred to the Sibu Hospital Specialist Clinic for a medical examination.
The suspect is currently remanded for investigation under Section 376 of the Penal Code, for statutory rape. — DayakDaily
