KUCHING, Nov 2: The Malaysian Ministry of Defence has selected Bintulu as a site for bolstering national defence.

Malaysian Defense Minister Dato Seri Utama Mohamad Hasan stated that Bintulu, particularly Samalaju, is a strategic area and the region closest to the nationā€™s economic zone, Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) reported.

Mohamad explained that his ministry will build the 31st Malaysian Army Brigade (TDM) camp, the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) Maritime Region Four Headquarters, and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Air Base in Bintulu.

ā€œBasically, it has been approved and now we are just waiting for the official letter.

ā€œThis clearly shows the governmentā€™s commitment, particularly through the Ministry of Defense, to ensure that (forces stationed at) the coastline, sea, air, and border in Kalimantan are always in a state of readiness,ā€ he said, as quoted by Ukas.

He said this while being interviewed by the media after paying his first courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in Kuching today.

Mohamad further noted that Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim has approved the construction of seven new posts along the Kalimantan border.

ā€œThree posts have been completed. Four more are still under construction. This is to make it easier for military personnel to carry out their duties while reducing cross-border activities,ā€ he added.

Also present were Army Eastern Field Commander Lieutenant General Datuk Mohd Sofi Md Lepi and First Infantry Division Commander Major General Hassan Embong. ā€” DayakDaily
