KUCHING, Sept 7: Air connectivity between Malaysia and Japan has received a major boost following the arrival of Malaysia Airlines’ inaugural direct flight service from Fukuoka to Kuala Lumpur at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 today.
The new route marks Malaysia Airlines’ third gateway in Japan alongside Tokyo and Osaka, opening direct travel access for visitors from Fukuoka, the wider Kyushu region, and surrounding areas.
Operating five times weekly, the route utilises a Boeing 737-8 aircraft with a capacity of 174 seats per flight and a flight duration of approximately six hours and 45 minutes.
Tourism Malaysia director-general Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim highlighted that Fukuoka and the wider Kyushu region represent a significant market for Malaysia, particularly in attracting visitors interested in leisure, culture, nature, gastronomy, and education tourism.
“Improved air connectivity is fundamental to facilitating visitor flows and creating greater opportunities for tourism cooperation. Tourism Malaysia will continue to work closely with our airline and industry partners to maximize the potential of this new route,” he said in a statement today.
The inaugural flight was accorded a ceremonial welcome at KLIA, attended by Tourism Malaysia International Promotion Division (Asia & Africa) senior director Nuwal Fadhilah Ku Azmi, Malaysia Airlines Group (MAG) Eastern Region Commercial Sales head George Low, and representatives from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).
The expanded network is set to support the upcoming Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 (VM2026-2027) campaign while also building momentum ahead of 2027, which marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Japan.
According to Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia recorded 200,579 visitor arrivals from Japan between January and June 2026—a 7.2 per cent increase from the 187,069 visitors recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.
As of August 2026, total air connectivity between both nations reached 78 weekly flights providing 20,321 seats per week. — DayakDaily
