SIBU, Nov 7: Sibu could host a major international archery competition next year in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2027, as Sarawak explores opportunities to develop the sport into a tourism attraction.
This proposal was raised by the federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Crafts Dato Sri Tiong King Sing during the opening of the International Archery Coaching and Wellbeing Workshop 2026 at a hotel here today.
He said he had discussed the idea with the organising chairman and requested the association to submit a proposal for next year’s event, adding that his ministry and Tourism Malaysia could work together with the Sibu Division Archery Association to organise the international competition.
Tiong, who is also the incumbent for Dudong, said he would discuss with his ministry the possibility of developing archery as one of Sarawak’s tourism products to encourage more visitors to come and participate in sporting events.
“We also welcome more international archers to come to Sibu to take part in competitions and sporting events. This will allow our local athletes to gain more experience, learn from one another and build friendships through sports.
“I hope this workshop will lead to more international exchanges and cooperation, and help to strengthen archery in Sibu and Sarawak,” he said at the event, where his speech was made available to DayakDaily.
Commenting on the workshop, he praised Sibu for proactively hosting the programme, which brings together coaches and participants to support the development of archery.
Tiong described archery as a sport that requires discipline, focus, and patience, which plays an important role in building confidence, improving mental strength, and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
“I believe this workshop is a good opportunity for our local coaches to learn from international expertise, gain new knowledge and improve their coaching skills.
“We should continue to introduce new ideas and training methods so that our athletes can receive better guidance and compete at a higher level,” he said.
Moving forward, he urged the public, especially the younger generation, to take up archery as developing young talent takes time, proper training, and continuous support.
“I hope the association will continue to work with schools, communities and other sports organisations to make archery more accessible to the younger generation,” he said. — DayakDaily
