Machete-wielding man in Mukah arrested over threats in Melanau dialect during livestream

KUCHING, Oct 7: A man who made threatening remarks in the Melanau dialect while brandishing a machete during a live broadcast on Facebook was arrested by the police on Monday (Oct 6).

In a statement, Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said that the video, which was about two minutes and 16 seconds long and uploaded by Facebook account holder Syawal Mohamad, was initially broadcast live before going viral on social media.

He said that a report was lodged by a 34-year-old man believed to be the victim of the threats at around 5pm.

In addition to the arrest, police also seized a machete, a mobile phone, a car, a face mask, and clothing used by the suspect during the video recording.

A urine test conducted on the suspect, who is an e-hailing driver, tested negative for drugs.

The case is being investigated under Section 507B of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation via communication and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

He added that a remand application for the suspect will be made today to assist further investigation.

At the same time, he also advised the public not to make statements or post content on social media that could cause public unrest.
