SIBU, May 25: Today is the first day that stage bus service can resume operation since the halting of service on March 18 when Movement Control Order (MCO) was enforced.

Passengers could also enjoy a flat rate of RM1 until end of this year as the State Government is subsidising the fare.

Sarawak Bus Transport Company Association adviser, Lau Khing Seng however lamented that only few passengers were recorded today.

“It is good that there are subsidies from the government. But if poor response from the people like what we have seen today remains as such for the next few months, we will be making a loss.

“To break even we need at least 50 per cent capacity for each trip,” he said.

He said despite the lukewarm response from the people, bus companies would still need to operate.

In Sibu, he said the three bus companies that had resumed operation today are Lanang Road Bus Companies, Teku Bus Companies and Sungai Merah Bus Companies.

The routes are Jalan Lanang, Jalan Teku,Sibujaya, Jalan Sentosa and Sibu Hospital.

As for Kuching, he said not all companies had resumed operation today.

Lau hoped the RM1 flat rate would continue up to next year so as to ease the burden of the poor. -DayakDaily
