KOTA SAMARAHAN, April 4: Deputy Education Minister Teo Ni Ching lashed out at Umno leaders criticising the Education Ministry for the decision by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB) to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

She noted that the UEC has been recognised for some 20 years as a prerequisite for the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) examinations.

Teo said, the Education Ministry till now has not recognised the UEC as but the LPQB has been recognising it for some 20 years already, and there should not be any problems for CLP candidates.

“All this while it (UEC) has been recognised (as a prerequisite for CLP examination). I think Umno leaders should do their homework first,” she said.

She was reacting to Kedah Umno Information Chief Datuk Suraya Yaacob who yesterday said that Teo and her minister Dr Maszlee Malik had made contradicting remarks on the UEC recognition.

Dr Maszlee had earlier said the recognition of UEC was not up to the Education Ministry.

His statement was echoed by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who yesterday said only the government can decide on recognising the UEC.

He also said the recent decision taken by the LPQB to recognise the UEC was only their opinion.

“If we want to recognise it, it is the government that must recognise,” he told reporters after chairing the PPBM Supreme Council meeting in Kuala Lumpur last night. — DayakDaily
