KUCHING, Nov 7: The Communications Ministry is planning to establish more media centres across Sarawak to ensure journalists can provide wider coverage of the upcoming State Election, given the State’s vast geographical area.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the move was necessary to address the challenges of media coverage across Sarawak’s different regions.

“I believe more than one media centre will be set up so that we can provide better services to our media colleagues.

“If we establish only one media centre in Kuching, it would still be insufficient for those who need to cover events in Miri, Sibu and other areas,” she said after inspecting the Communications Ministry Media Centre in Ayer Keroh, Melaka here today.

Also present was Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Director Khairul Nizam Mohd Mostar.

Yesterday, the Election Commission (EC) announced Dec 12 as polling day for the 13th Sarawak Election, with nomination day on Nov 28 and early voting on Dec 8.

The 14-day campaign period will begin following nomination day.

Meanwhile, Teo also expressed appreciation to media personnel covering the 16th Melaka State Election, despite tomorrow being a public holiday in conjunction with Deepavali.

“Tomorrow is a public holiday, but our media colleagues cannot take a break as they have to continue working throughout the Melaka State Election. I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to them,” she said.
