Longhouse residents’ solidarity would be affected by MPKK, opines SUPP Dudong chief

SIBU, Oct 20: The implementation of the Village Community Management Council (MPKK) would seriously affect the solidarity of longhouse residents.

According to Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong in a statement, the implementation of MPKK would disrupt the unity that has long been preserved in the longhouses.

“Clearly, it can be seen that MPKK is just a political tool by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Government to achieve its aims without taking into consideration of the ADAT Iban,” Wong claimed when officiating at the installation and usage of electricity supply at Rumah Dumin, Tengah Sungai Assan, on Saturday.

Wong also opined that MPKK is completely unnecessary as longhouses already have the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) which has served the people in the longhouses faithfully for the last three decades.

According to him, the formation of MPKK is a complete wastage of taxpayers’ money as its chairman also receives remuneration from the federal government.

“With both Penghulu and MPKK chairman, how can we have two (branches of) leadership in one longhouses? And of course it will cause disagreement,” Wong disclosed, adding he is unsure whether MPKK follows the Iban ‘adat’ as it come from the peninsula and receives orders from there.

Wong, who is also the only candidate nominated by SUPP Dudong to contest in the next State Election in N52 Dudong Constituency opined that the next general election would be between the Sarawak and the peninsular.

“We need a local political party in order for us to continue protecting our rights, such as land and immigration autonomy rights,” he added.

He also urged local voters to support both SUPP and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) because they are the only local Sarawakian political entities that truly understand the needs of Sarawakians.
