Long Jegan Cluster in Bintulu records 57 positive Covid-19 cases

KUCHING, May 1: A 25-year-old teacher of a primary school in Long Jegan has tested positive for Covid-19 and is the index case of the new Long Jegan Cluster in Beluru after 56 others tested positive for the virus.

According to reports from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the Long Jegan Cluster involves a primary school in Long Jegan after the index case, case 26,339 was identified through symptomatic screening on April 22.


The committee added a total of 162 individuals linked to the school have been swabbed for Covid-19.

As a result, 57 individuals including the index case have tested positive for Covid-19, 98 have tested negative and seven individuals are awaiting the results of their Covid-19 swab test.

Apart from that, SDMC said there is also a new cluster of Covid-19 known as the Sungai Mas Cluster which involves a longhouse in Sungai Mas in Sebauh.

The committee said the index case was case 19,609 which was identified through symptomatic screening at a private clinic in Bintulu.

The rapid test kit (RTK) Antigen for the case was positive and was then referred to Bintulu Hospital whereby the rapid test polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR) test was also positive.

Following that, active case detection was being conducted to family members, social contacts and villagers of the longhouse whereby 230 individuals were swabbed for Covid-19.

As a result, 52 positive cases of coronavirus were identified, 84 tested positive and 94 individuals are awaiting the results of their Covid-19 swab test.

Meanwhile, SDMC said there were four new clusters of Covid-19 identified.

They are the Batu 25 Cluster in Bintulu, Long Jegan Cluster in Beluru, Sungai Mas Cluster in Sebauh and Sungai Nirai Cluster in Selangau.

The additional four clusters of Covid-19 has brought the cumulative active clusters of Covid-19 in Sarawak to 79 clusters.

Out of that, 16 clusters reported an increase of 117 new cases while 63 clusters did not report new cases. — DayakDaily
