KUCHING, Nov 7: A local man was fined RM2,000 by the Magistrate’s Court for intentionally breaking the glass display of a food outlet, causing damages amounting to RM100.

Gilbert Karun Ding Robert, 26, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan. If he fails to pay the fine, he faces four months in prison.

Gilbert was charged with committing the offense at a food outlet located at Batu 7, at approximately 1am on November 2.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant and five of his friends were outside the food outlet when they were approached by several men carrying between themselves a wooden stick, a machete, and a guandao weapon.

The complainant and his friends hurriedly entered the food outlet, and one of the individuals from the group swung a wooden stick towards the complainant, who was trying to close the food outlet gate.

The accused managed to knock over a small display owned by the complainant inside the outlet, resulting in it shattering.

The complainant subsequently filed a police report, which led to the arrest of the accused at a restaurant along Jalan Lapangan Terbang at around 9.45pm the same day.

It is understood that the incident occurred due to a misunderstanding between one of the complainant’s friends and a man in the group at an entertainment centre.

The prosecution was led by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while the accused was not represented by legal counsel. ā€” DayakDaily
