KUCHING, July 26: A local 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an investigation into an incident of intrusion and vandalism where 51 graves at Kemunting Islamic Cemetery in Jalan Sebiew, Bintulu had been sprayed with paint.
Bintulu District police chief Supt Batholomew Umpit confirmed that a police report has been lodged of the incident that occured on July 24 at about 7.15am.
“A total of 41 graves were defaced with blue writing, while another 10 graves were sprayed with red paint,” he reported in a statement today.
The case is being investigated under Section 297 and 427 of the Penal Code for trespassing into a cemetery and committing mischief on property.
In light of the ongoing investigation, Batholomew said the suspect was remanded for three days, from July 25 to July 28, to aid in the police’s investigation.
If found guilty, the offense under Section 297 of the Penal Code carries a maximum prison sentence of up to one year, a fine, or both. Additionally, Section 427 provides for a minimum imprisonment of one year or a fine, or both.
The police issued a reminder to the public to avoid making speculative statements or spreading false information that could create unnecessary anxiety among the community.
