KUCHING, May 25: A two-storey house located at Lorong Seladah 2 in Taman Everbright here was engulfed in flames today, suspected to have been ignited by a lightning strike.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak responded to the emergency at 3.15pm and swiftly mobilised teams of firefighters from the Tabuan Jaya and Padungan stations to the scene.
Initial reports indicated that 70 per cent of the upper floor of the house sustained damage from the fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters immediately worked to prevent the flames from spreading further and successfully extinguished the fire by 5.39pm.
The operation concluded after firefighters ensured there were no remaining sources of ignition and secured the safety of the site.
Michael Kong, special assistant to Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, stated that his team promptly rushed to the house upon receiving news of the fire.
In a statement, he said, fortunately, the fire was well contained, and no one was hurt in the incident.
“From my discussion with the landlady and her neighbours, the house caught fire after being struck by lightning. Steps are being taken for the landlady to stay with her daughter tonight while Bomba undertakes an investigation,” he said.
Kong also assured that the DAP Stampin service centre would extend assistance to the affected family as needed. — DayakDaily
