MIRI, June 27: The Miri Heritage Trail is more than just a pathway through the city’s rich past—it is a vital legacy designed to preserve and celebrate Miri’s unique identity for generations to come.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Deputy Minister of Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting described the trail as a collective initiative to honour and safeguard Miri’s remarkable journey—from its early beginnings as Maraboo (Miri in 1791) to its rise as Malaysia’s first oil town.
“Legacy is for those who see beyond the present. It is for those who understand that the stories of a place are not merely nostalgic, but carry meaning, a sense of belonging, and a shared responsibility,” he said during the official launch of the Miri Heritage Trail recently.
He emphasised that the trail stands as a testament to the city’s collective memory, paying tribute to historic events such as Awang Metali’s resistance at Brighton Beach and the sacrifices of those who fell during World War II.
“This trail is a legacy for the future. It reflects a united effort to celebrate, protect, and share Miri’s extraordinary heritage with the world,” he added.
Ting further stressed that heritage should not be confined to displays or exhibitions—it must be brought to life, understood deeply, and protected together by the community.
Deputy Minister of Puublic Health and Housing Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datu Sherrina Hussaini and Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chairman Dato Dennis Ngau were among those present. — DayakDaily
