KUCHING, Jan 13: Lazada Malaysia has expressed their interest to establish collaborations with Sarawak through Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) to be part of the Sarawak digital economy ecosystem.

Lazada executive vice president and head of Users Growth and Traffic, Rick Ting, highlighted this when leading a delegation to visit SMA at its office here yesterday.

The courtesy visit between SMA and Lazada Malaysia was to explore collaborative efforts for digital campaigns to support the local entrepreneurs as well as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and at the same time to explore collaborative on-ground efforts to increase the participation from industry stakeholders.

SMA acting general manager Erny Sohana shared with the delegation on Sarawak’s plan to further drive the digital economy agenda by providing more services and opportunities that includes development programmes, funding and investment opportunities, research and development platforms, co-working spaces and more for the local entrepreneurs and innovators to expand their businesses to the regional and global market.

“As part of the Sarawak government’s policy to focus on the digital economy to propel Sarawak to achieve developed status by 2030, it is crucial that our local entrepreneurs and MSMEs, especially those in the rural areas are given the same opportunity similar to those in the urban areas,” she said.

Erny pointed out that SMA is also actively overseeing all telecommunication projects in Sarawak that are being delivered as scheduled to ensure that all Sarawakians especially in the rural areas have access to Internet connectivity.

“This is to ease their participation in online businesses and in turn, create new skill sets and jobs for the rural community that will boost the local economic growth,” she added.

She reiterated that public-private partnership is important as this will bring about successful economic transformation and growth for the betterment of all Sarawakians.

Also present during the courtesy visit were representatives from the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak (MINTRED), Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC). — DayakDaily
