KUCHING, July 21: The completion of the new Lawas Health Clinic and Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) Lawas campus is set to boost socio-economic progress and bridge development gaps in northern Sarawak, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

Awang Tengah said both projects are part of the Sarawak government’s strategy to enhance basic services in rural areas and narrow the urban-rural divide.

During a site visit and media briefing yesterday (July 20), he shared that the Lawas Health Clinic is slated for full completion by October this year, with only minor delays due to additional site works.

“I have inspected the progress at the site and found that some medical equipment has already arrived and is ready to be installed,” he said, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).

Once operational, the new clinic is expected to serve approximately 300 patients daily, offering modern, comfortable, and efficient healthcare services.

“This facility will stand as a symbol of modern healthcare infrastructure that benefits rural communities and significantly improves the standard of health services in this area,” he added.

On the Centexs Lawas campus, Awang Tengah, who is also Bukit Sari assemblyman, said the newly completed campus is now operating with an increased student capacity of between 500 and 700, up from just 120 previously.

The campus offers 21 skill training programmes across diverse fields such as oil and gas, food technology, data and IT, tailoring, hospitality, and local culture.

“This is in line with the State’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce to support the growth of modern economic sectors such as smart agriculture, tourism, renewable energy, electronics, and food,” he explained.

Lawas has also been identified as a strategic location with the potential to become a regional hub for technical skills training. As such, the campus is open to students from Sabah, the Federal Territory of Labuan, and Kalimantan, Indonesia.

“Cross-border cooperation in technical education is a crucial step toward regional economic integration,” he said.

Also present during the visit were Limbang Division Resident Unus Tambi; Political Secretary to the Premier, Awangku Jinal Abedin Pengiran Dato Jawa; Lawas District Officer Ladin Atok; and Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA) Regional Director Datu Ubaidillah Abd Latif. — DayakDaily
