KUCHING, Jan 14: A late-night fire destroyed one single-storey terrace house and damaged five others at Lorong Sim Kheng Hong 2, Kenyalang Park, last night (Jan 13).
According to a report by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), an emergency call was received at 9.58pm and firefighters from the Padungan station were deployed, assisted by firefighters from the Batu Lintang and Tabuan Jaya stations.
“The fire involved six single-storey terrace houses with permanent structures. The fire spread quickly due to the absence of separating walls,” said the senior operations commander.
The area of each house is 20×40 square feet while the estimated damage to each house and information on the number of occupants are as follows:
- No. 1323: Three occupants (1 man, 1 woman, 1 baby), 30 per cent damaged
- No. 1324: Two occupants (2 men), 70 per cent damaged
- No. 1325: One occupant (1 man), 100 per cent damaged
- No, 1326: Two occupants (2 women), 80 per cent damaged
- No. 1327: Six occupants (2 elderly men, 2 elderly women, 2 women) 60 per cent damaged
- No. 1328: No occupants, 5 per cent damaged
“Firefighters conducted offensive and defensive techniques and opened the roof for ventilation.
“A firebreak was conducted on the fifth house, preventing the fire from spreading and causing more damage to the sixth house,” said the report.
No casualties were reported and the cause of the fire is still being investigated. The operation ended at 12.13am.
A temporary evacuation centre at Kenyalang Park’s KCPA Community Hall has been opened to accommodate three families totalling 10 individuals, while four other families comprising eight people are taking shelter at relatives’ homes. — DayakDaily
