KUCHING, Jan 30: A landslide on Song/Sipan-Temalat Road this morning has led to a temporary closure of the route.

Federal Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the incident is believed to have been caused by continuous heavy rain since yesterday (Jan 29).

Based on initial reports from the Public Works Department (JKR) in Kapit, Nanta said the closure was implemented to allow for a diversion to accommodate light vehicles.

“However, access for heavy vehicles will remain restricted due to the unstable and unsafe condition of the soil in the affected area,” he said in a Facebook post today.

He also mentioned that Kapit Division Resident Elvis Didit, along with Katibas assemblyman Lidam Asan and Kapit District Officer Harry Bruce, visited the site to assess the damage.

In addition to the landslide on Song/Sipan-Temalat Road, Nanta, who is Kapit Member of Parliament (MP), informed that several other landslides have been reported in the Kapit and Belaga districts.

The affected areas include near the entrance to the TV & Radio Transmission Tower and Lorong 1, Taman Bian Hua, Kapit District, and Kilometer 34, Menjawah-Belaga Road and Bakun-Belaga Road, between Uma Badeng Dangan and Bakun, Belaga District.

“The Kapit Division Resident has instructed the Kapit District Disaster Management Committee to closely monitor the situation across the district in preparation for any further challenges due to the current bad weather.

“The Belaga District Disaster Management Committee has already begun clearing affected routes to allow road users to pass through safely,” he added.

At the same time, JKR has set up appropriate signage at the affected locations to ensure public safety.

“I urge all residents and road users in the affected areas to exercise caution and follow instructions from the relevant authorities to ensure their safety,” he emphasised. – DayakDaily
