KUCHING, Dec 22: A landowner has been deprived of access to his land for more than two years due to the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway near 9 1/2 Mile Jalan Penrissen here.

Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen, who was alerted to this issue, said the affected land was the first lot from the main road but the access road (cross over) to his land was removed by the contractor to construct the drain along the main road.

“Despite numerous complaints by the landowner and more than two years after the cross over was removed, the contractor has refused to reconstruct the cross over.

“Patience has run out and the landowner has no choice but to seek assistance from DAP to help highlight the issue to the relevant authority,” he said in a statement today.

Chong together with his assistant Michael Kong attended to the complaint and visited the site today.

While DAP does not object to development, the newly elected Padungan assemblyman however emphasised that the authority must make sure that development work should not unduly and unreasonably affect the people.

“Imagine, a landowner being denied the access to his land and his land laid wasted there for more than two years.

“The contractor and the authority must be held accountable and responsible for such irresponsible and rash acts,” he said.

Chong added that they will formally write to the Public Works Department (JKR) and the contractor to seek redress for the affected landowner. — DayakDaily
