KUCHING, Feb 24: The 2025 Asia Oceania Pre-Qualifying for the Billie Jean King Cup Juniors and Davis Cup Juniors will see 148 participants from 25 countries taking part in the prestigious event, which will take place from March 2-16 at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association Centre (SLTA).

“We are thrilled to welcome 25 countries, with a total of 37 teams —comprising 14 girls’ teams and 23 boys’ teams. With each team consisting of three players and one coach, we will host 148 participants, excluding parents, trainers, physiotherapists, and International Tennis Federation (ITF) officials.

“Altogether, we anticipate more than 200 international visitors arriving in Kuching for this event. Their presence not only enriches the competitive atmosphere but also strengthens international ties, as we build friendships through the unifying spirit of sports,” he said during a press conference at Bangunan Baitulmakmur here today.

Additionally, Abdul Karim said that the ITF provided a grant of USD1,600 per nation, approximately USD59,200 (RM260,000), which will enable the SLTA to provide essential hospitality services, including local transportation, meals, and accommodation for participants.

“Hosting this international tournament will also have a positive economic impact on Sarawak. With players, coaches, and supporters staying in our hotels, dining in local restaurants, and exploring our vibrant culture, this event contributes to Sarawak’s growing reputation as a sports tourism destination.

“I would like to extend my best wishes to all the participating teams —may you compete with passion, integrity, and sportsmanship. To SLTA, ITF, and all the dedicated volunteers and officials, thank you for your hard work in making this event possible.

“Let us come together to celebrate the future of tennis and make this tournament an unforgettable experience for everyone involved,” said Abdul Karim, who is also the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak. — DayakDaily
