KUCHING, Aug 23: The Sarawak taekwondo squad from Kuching Taekwondo and Self-Defence Club (WTF) Satok Training Centre bagged five gold, one silver and three bronze medals at the 2023 Asian Taekwondo Club Championship in Shenzhen, China recently.
According to a media release today, the championship witnessed participation of nine male and female taekwondo athletes from the centre.
The gold medalists were Puteri Durratun Zulaikha Samat in the women’s heavyweight class, while Zara Nur Zafirah Mohd Yusof in the female’s junior individual poomsae, Iris Nur Irdina Mohd Yusof in the female’s youth individual poomsae, Fedealis Kom Twin in the male’s junior individual poomsae and Anuwath Sarat in the male’s cadet individual poomsae.
Chai Soon Hien won the silver medal in the men open’s lightweight class. Adding to the club’s achievement, three athletes scored bronze medals: Clement Law Mien Mua in the middleweight class, Leston Kok Zi Yi in the lightweight class and Jong Thian Fatt in the heavyweight class.
Coach Tan Cheng Qiang expressed his satisfaction with the club’s members, praising their outstanding performance.
He remarked, “This is a great achievement and successful outing for all our members. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to both Sarawak and national associations, particularly president Azizul Annuar Adenan, the head of the team, the coaching staff, fellow athletes, parents, and guardians, for their unwavering support throughout the event held in Pingshan district, Shenzhen, China.”
Furthermore, the club goes beyond competitions, offering its members diverse learning opportunities. Apart from their active participation in various taekwondo tournaments, the members have also excelled in demonstration events.
The club’s 60-member demo team recently showcased their skills at the 2023 Kuching Festival Martial Art Display.
Tan emphasised the vital role of coaches, members, parents, and guardians in supporting the club’s activities and events, which have enabled the smooth implementation of their programmes.
He revealed that the club has recently concluded a successful taekwondo upgrading session, with around 100 members hailing from different training centres and schools in Kuching and Samarahan divisions having completed their taekwondo exams. — DayakDaily
