KUCHING, Jan 31: A 48-year-old man was sentenced to eight months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court today for disposing of stolen jewellery worth RM30,000 by pawning it at local pawnshops.
Philip Uding, from Kampung Rayu, pleaded guilty to three charges before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Alwi.
According to the charges, he had disposed of several stolen gold items, including five necklaces, four bracelets, ten rings, and ten pairs of earrings, at three different pawnshops across Kuching.
The offences were committed between 1pm and 3.30pm on January 15.
He was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The court sentenced him to six months in jail for the first charge, seven months for the second, and eight months for the third.
However, the sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of eight months behind bars, effective from today.
Case facts revealed that on January 5, a 69-year-old man discovered that several pieces of family jewellery stored in a bedroom cabinet were missing.
The loss, estimated at RM30,000, prompted him to lodge a police report.
Investigations led to Philip’s arrest at a house in Taman Marina Jaya, Matang, on January 14. Authorities later found that he had taken the jewellery and pawned it.
He also assisted police in locating the pawnshops where he had sold the items. The shop manager confirmed that the accused had pawned the gold pieces.
ASP Arman Ibrahim prosecuted the case, while Philip was unrepresented in court. — DayakDaily
