KUCHING, July 20: About 800 football fans gathered at MBKS Square this morning to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final live, erupting in celebration as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to lift the coveted trophy.
Among those joining the public screening was Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who witnessed the thrilling final alongside football enthusiasts as Spain secured their second World Cup title.
The victory was sealed by Ferran Torres, who scored the decisive goal in extra time after both teams remained locked in a goalless battle during normal time.
Torres found the net in the 106th minute after receiving a headed assist from Nico Williams, handing Spain the breakthrough during the second period of extra time.
Spain gained an advantage late in the second half when Argentina were reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernandez was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Pau Cubarsi.
With the numerical advantage, Spain continued their pressure during extra time and eventually found the breakthrough through Torres to seal victory.
Spain had earlier seen two efforts ruled out during the final. Nico Williams’ attempt was cancelled after the referee awarded a foul in the build-up, while another effort by Torres was disallowed after he was judged to have been offside.
The match statistics reflected Spain’s dominance, with La Roja registering 20 attempts, including 11 shots on target, while Argentina struggled to create clear chances throughout the match.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who was expected to deliver another memorable World Cup moment, was unable to make a major impact as Spain’s defence successfully contained his movements and limited his influence in the final.
The triumph also marked a historic achievement for Spain’s young generation, with 19-year-olds Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi becoming among the youngest players to lift the World Cup trophy.
Their success at such a young age highlighted Spain’s strong football development system and suggested that the nation could remain a major force in world football for years to come.
Spain’s latest World Cup victory adds to their football legacy following their maiden title in 2010, confirming their return to the summit of international football.
