KUCHING, Dec 8: The Kuching Choral Society (KCS) is gearing up to elevate the cultural scene in Sarawak with the announcement of the first-ever Sarawak Choir Conductor’s Workshop, conducted in collaboration with the Malaysian Association of Music Educators (MAME).

The workshop is scheduled to unfold from Jan 26 to 28 next year at Telang Usan Hotel.

According to a media release, globally renowned music educator, speaker, facilitator and adjudicator Susanna Saw will guide the workshop.

Holding a Master’s in Music Education (Choral Focus) from Westminster Choir College, USA, Saw currently serves as a lecturer and choir director at the Faculty of Music at the University of Malaya (UM) and the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA).

Her choirs, including the MIA Ladies Chorus, the Men’s Chorus, and the Mixed Voices Choir, have earned accolades in international competitions.

With her vast experience and expertise, participants can anticipate a wealth of insight drawn from Saw’s successful track record in choral education, enriched further by her role as the organiser of the 24th International Kodály Symposium in August 2019, held in Kuching.

Susanna Saw will act as the facilitator for the workshop.

The workshop will delve into Recruitment Strategies, Audition Process, Vocal Pedagogy, Basic Conducting Gestures, Repertoire Reading, and Rehearsal Techniques.

This comprehensive curriculum aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in choral leadership.

KCS president Benedict JC Lo emphasised that the workshop strategically introduces the fundamentals of choral conducting, strategies for establishing and developing a vibrant choral community, and provides insights and tools to prepare choirs for upcoming competitions.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Lo extends a warm invitation to all music enthusiasts for this foundational workshop.
