KUCHING, Jan 29: Almost 100 residents of Kampung Rantau Panjang were evacuated to the relief center at SJK(C) Chung Hua Batu Kawa here after floodwaters submerged homes up to the first storey high late last night (Jan 28).
Sarawak Civil Defence Force (APM) reported that a total of 27 families, comprising 98 individuals, were relocated around 7.30pm as rising floodwaters overwhelmed the village following continuous heavy rainfall.
In photos provided by the department, floodwaters were seen surging dangerously high, with one image showing the first storey of several houses completely submerged.
The flooding was caused by a combination of heavy rainfall and an overwhelmed drainage system, causing water levels to rise rapidly.
In addition to flooding homes, several roads in the area became impassable, delaying rescue efforts and further complicating the situation.
At the relief center, the affected families were provided with food, water, and blankets while emergency teams continue to assess the damage.
As of 12.38pm today, APM reported that despite drizzle rain, the water levels were showing a decreasing trend. – DayakDaily
