SIBU, June 8: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Sibu will continue to monitor the market situation in its efforts to ensure that there is ample supply of chicken and chicken eggs.
Its chief, Kelyn Bolhassan in a statement today said that they will continue to hold engagement sections with industry players and related government agencies to ensure that supplies of the two items are always sufficient to meet the demand of consumers.
A few days before the Gawai Dayak celebration here, the huge demand for chicken eggs resulted in limited stock.
“The government has taken intervention steps by extending the Maximum Price Scheme for chicken and chicken egg until June 30. This involves chicken and chicken eggs (Grade A, B and C),” he added.
The government’s move, Kelyn said, was to assist the people during this current economic situation.
He added that in order to curb unreasonable price hikes by irresponsible traders, action would be taken against offenders under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-profiteering Act 2011.
“Any trader who commits an offense will be prosecuted under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011,” he warned.
The offence provides for a penalty of RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding three years, or both, or compound up to RM50,000 for individuals; and a fine up to RM500,000 or compound up to RM250,000 for companies.
Kelyn urged the public to lodge reports with the ministry if they come across traders who do not comply with the law regarding this scheme.
