KUCHING, May 26: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has described Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen’s objection to the proposed Kuching’s new international airport and deep-sea port projects has been described as “misguided” and “a disservice to Sarawak’s long-term economic aspirations”.

Yap took aim at Chong’s recent speech in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) where the Padungan assemblyman questioned the need and cost of the multi-billion ringgit infrastructure projects announced by the Sarawak government.

He stressed that the current Kuching International Airport (KIA) is already operating near or beyond its capacity, and a new international airport is not a luxury but an urgent necessity in light of Sarawak’s expanding economy and increasing global connectivity.

“[The new airport] will support increasing passenger and cargo volumes, boost tourism, and attract foreign investment.

“Does Chong expect Sarawak to stand still while other regions like Johor, Sabah, and even Kalimantan accelerate forward?” Yap questioned during a press conference held at DUS Complex here today.

On the deep-sea port project, Yap emphasised its importance to reduce Sarawak’s reliance on external ports such as Port Klang and Singapore, allowing the State to establish itself as a competitive regional logistics hub.

“Is Chong suggesting we remain a perpetual feeder economy instead of positioning ourselves as a competitive trade center?” he added.

Responding to Chong’s concerns over project costs, Yap defended the financial prudence of the Sarawak government, highlighting its responsible management of State reserves and commitment to investments that promise long-term returns.

He also criticised Chong for what he described as “selective outrage,” noting that during the Pakatan Harapan administration—when DAP held the Finance Ministry—Sarawak faced massive development budget cuts.

“If Chong is truly concerned about financial matters, he should direct his criticism at the chronic underfunding of Sarawak by the federal government and the unfair revenue-sharing arrangements that continue to disadvantage us.

“Rather than welcoming Sarawak’s efforts to break free from over-dependence on Putrajaya, he (Chong) undermines them with baseless alarmism,” Yap pointed out.

Yap further stated Chong’s newfound demand for transparency rings hollow when placed against his silence during years of neglect and stagnation under a federal administration that sidelined Sarawak while the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government has consistently championed autonomy and infrastructure development.

He concluded that Chong’s criticism is more about political posturing than genuine concern for Sarawak’s future.

“Sarawak will no longer wait for handouts or approval from Peninsular-based political actors. The new international airport and deep-sea port are critical components of our economic transformation—projects that will create jobs, attract investments, and empower Sarawakians.

“YB Chong is entitled to his opinion, but the people of Sarawak deserve progress, not political posturing. The future is being built—with or without his approval,” Yap asserted. – DayakDaily
