KUCHING, April 18: After receiving a complaint regarding illegal rubbish dumping at a construction site for an access road in the southern part of Kuching International Airport (KIA), Public Work Department (JKR) contractor Reka Ikhtiar Sdn Bhd has agreed to address the issue, revealed Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.

Yap disclosed that the contractor has committed to clearing the rubbish, erecting warning signboards to deter further dumping, and installing barricades to restrict access to the dumping site.

“I appreciate and am thankful to the contractor for going beyond their scope of duties to clear the illegal rubbish dump,” he stated.

Yap emphasised the importance of responsible waste disposal, noting that illegal dumping imposes significant costs on local councils, ultimately borne by ratepayers.

“Instead of illegal dumping, individuals should responsibly dispose of bulk waste by contacting Trienekens at 082-612300 for rates and charges,” he suggested.

Yap urged local councils to address the issue by identifying designated waste disposal areas, potentially charging fees for bulk waste disposal.

He encouraged the public to report instances of illegal dumping to local councils, providing detailed information such as vehicle registration numbers, location, date, time, and descriptions of the rubbish and offenders.

“A photo taken from a mobile phone can be effective in identifying offenders,” he added.
