KUCHING, July 22: Sarawakians have been urged to uphold the spirit of “Sarawak First”, strengthen unity and work together towards building a brighter future for all as the State commemorates Sarawak Day today.
In conjunction with the celebration, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, together with community leaders, distributed Sarawak flags to hawkers and traders at the Kota Sentosa Market and surrounding commercial areas as a gesture of appreciation while spreading the spirit of patriotism ahead of the historic occasion.
The initiative also saw Sarawak flags being distributed to customers, motorists and motorcyclists passing through the area. The gesture received an encouraging response, with many members of the public proudly displaying the flags on their vehicles as a visible expression of their love for Sarawak and support for the Sarawak Day celebrations.
Yap said the flag distribution programme was not merely about encouraging the public to display the Sarawak flag, but also served as a reminder of the profound significance of July 22 in the history of Sarawak.
“It is a day for all Sarawakians to reflect on the State’s journey towards self-governance, honour the sacrifices and vision of past leaders, and renew their commitment to building a stronger, more prosperous and united Sarawak.
“Displaying the Sarawak flag is a simple yet meaningful expression of our pride, unity and love for our beloved State. Sarawak Day belongs to every Sarawakian, regardless of race or religion, and it reminds us of the importance of standing together to safeguard our unity and our future,” he said in a media release today.
Yap also expressed his appreciation to the hawkers, traders, customers, motorists and members of the public who warmly received the flags and supported the initiative.
He encouraged businesses, organisations and households throughout Kota Sentosa to proudly fly the Sarawak flag during the Sarawak Day celebrations as a symbol of solidarity, patriotism and shared identity.
He added that under the leadership of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government led by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Sarawak had continued to make significant strides in economic development, infrastructure, education, healthcare and digital transformation while protecting the State’s rights and interests.
