MARUDI, July 22: A 38-year-old man became the second victim found dead after a boat believed to be carrying four people capsized in Sungai Seperot, Long Selatong near Baram, with two others still missing as search and rescue operations continued today.
Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Marudi reported that the man’s body was discovered by villagers at the riverbank at about 8.50am, approximately two hours by boat from the location where the vessel was believed to have capsized.
The body was later transported by the Bomba team using a stretcher after they travelled to the site aboard a boat provided by villagers.
Identification of the victim was made by family members.
The incident was reported after four individuals from Kampung Long Selatong failed to return home after they were believed to have travelled by boat to Long San Health Clinic on Mondau (July 20). They could not be contacted by phone, prompting concerns among family members and villagers.
A search later found a boat believed to have been used by the group in a capsized condition at Sungai Seperot.
A four-year-old boy was earlier found dead by members of the public yesterday (July 21), with his remains taken to Long San Health Clinic.
The remaining two missing victims are a 43-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man.
Bomba Marudi, led by PBK I Eric Unyi, launched a search and rescue operation after receiving the report, with the SAR team departing at 6am today. The team reached the location at 12.30pm after travelling through logging roads, with the journey taking about five hours.
