KUCHING, Dec 11: A milestone in international relations was achieved today as the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for Friendship City Cooperation with Jinning District, Kunming, in Yunnan Province, China.
According to a media release, this partnership paves the way for potential collaboration across key sectors, including economy, trade, culture, youth, education, science and technology, and tourism.
The historic signing ceremony took place in Jinning, with MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos representing Kota Samarahan, and Jinning District Vice Mayor Yang Huirong signing on behalf of Jinning.
The partnership is designed to foster mutual growth, cultural exchange, and leverage the unique strengths and opportunities of each region.
During the ceremony, Minos expressed his pride in establishing Kota Samarahan’s first formal international friendship cooperation.
“Through this partnership with Jinning District, we aim to accelerate the development of Kota Samarahan by sharing knowledge, expertise, and opportunities. This cooperation marks a significant step towards enhancing our economic, scientific, educational, cultural, and tourism ties with China,” he said.
Jinning District, located in Kunming, Yunnan Province, spans 1,336 square kilometres and is home to a population of 346,000.
Known as an important hub for ecological, cultural, and tourism activities around Dianchi Lake, Jinning is also famous as the hometown of the legendary Admiral Zheng He.
Additionally, Jinning is globally recognised as the “Hometown of Flowers”, leading China in the planting area, production, and output value of fresh-cut flowers. The district plays a pivotal role in the global floriculture industry, ranking first in China.
MPKS emphasised that the friendship between Kota Samarahan and Jinning District will set the stage for long-term cooperation and mutual growth, opening the door for deeper understanding and shared progress across various sectors. — DayakDaily
