KUCHING, Sept 30: The uncertain status of the land lease for the KMC flats since the said lease expired in 2016 has left its residents in limbo, said Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei.

He urged Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng to continue to push for the state government to issue land titles for the KMC flats to Kuching South City Commission (MBKS) and set MBKS as proprietor to secure the said flats.

According to Wong, MBKS had applied for a renewal a few years before the expiry date to the state government, but there had been no response.

He said the then Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan had replied in the State Legislative Assembly saying the two parcels of land where KMC flats are situated will continue to be used for KMC flats and for welfare purposes, but under the supervision, control and care of MBKS.

“But there is no document to prove MBKS’ proprietorship over the land. This is unsecure for the residents of KMC flat cause the state government under Sarawak Land Code can alienate the land to any developer at whatever premium they like.”

He said if Pakatan Harapan comes to power in the state, PH will issue the title to the local council to secure the property, because it is a historical place which was built by the British government to help the urban poor for welfare purposes. Therefore, the land should not be used for commercial or personal purposes.
