KUCHING, Oct 19: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has articulated his vision for Sarawak to emerge as a significant player in the automotive manufacturing industry.

During the ‘Sarawak Agenda: Town Hall Session with the Premier of Sarawak’ held today at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) in Kuala Lumpur, in conjunction with Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2024, Abang Johari addressed a student’s inquiry about the State government’s initiatives to develop local automotive production capabilities.

“I have a dream of producing cars assembled right here in Sarawak, perhaps named the ‘Kenyalang Car’, but we need the appropriate technology to make this happen,” he stated.

He stressed that the focus of this technology must be on renewable energy and carbon reduction, as this would help link Sarawak with external companies.

The town hall, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and other State ministers, allows Sarawakians to connect with key government leaders and learn about policies and initiatives for Sarawak’s development.

The Premier also revealed ongoing collaboration between the Sarawak government and international automotive manufacturers to attract investment and establish the region as a key assembly location.

He further noted that discussions have already taken place with Hyundai to assess Sarawak’s suitability as a site for assembling hydrogen-powered vehicles.

“If they wish to produce new hydrogen-powered cars, I believe Sarawak is the ideal assembly location,” he added.

In addition, Abang Johari mentioned that Toyota is developing hydrogen-fueled models and reiterated that the State aims to collaborate with international automotive firms before establishing its own manufacturing capabilities. — DayakDaily
